The Archies
Created for mass consumption by bubblegum-pop genius Don Kirshner (the man who gave us the Monkees and the early 70s, Midnight Special), the Archies were the ultimate manufactured pop group. They existed on television as an animated series based on the comic book characters of the same name. The Archies are a fictional garage band "founded" by Archie Andrews, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones, a group of adolescent fictional characters of the Archie universe, in the context of the animated TV series, The Archie Show.

The fictional band's music was recorded by session musicians featuring The Cuff Links' lead singer Ron Dante on vocals and released as a series of singles and albums. Their most successful song, "Sugar, Sugar", became one of the biggest hits of the bubblegum pop genre that flourished from 1968 to 1972.

An unusual distribution mode for their music was as cardboard records embossed directly onto the backs of breakfast cereal boxes so that the cardboard record could be cut out and played on a turntable (although it should be noted that their music was also available on standard issue LPs and 45s).

In other notes: Ray Stevens was one of the handclappers . . . Dante sang on the Cuff Link song, "Tracy", which was in the top five at the same time as "Sugar, Sugar" . . . Ron went on to be the musical director and co-producer of Barry Manilow. The Monkees had a chance to record the song two years earlier, but they turned it down (or so the story goes) . . . and Wilson Pickett also recorded a Soul version.

Some of these historical facts and trivia will seem "overextended" in some areas but, hey, I tried to make a short synopsis and sometimes that was hard to do. You will find that most of these artist(s), bands, groups has a lot of history than you realize. You also keep finding items to add or you had to leave data there because the next paragraph might refer back to the previous, etc, etc...catch my drift?

This page is part of an ongoing project as part of our improvements to the website and we thank you for visiting!
